Shopping is Part of Our Lifestyle

Think of how much money could go to The Arc-South Bay if supporters did their shopping at www.iGive.com/TheArc where up to 26% of every purchase is donated to The Arc-South Bay! At iGive.com, membership is free! There are no hidden charges or price markups, and you don't have to track your purchases anymore (download the iGive shopping window for automatic shopping credits). So hurry up and visit the Mall at iGive.com, where you can shop 400+ stores for the newest fashions at Coldwater Creek, Lands' End, Gap.com, Spiegel, JCPenney, and Eddie Bauer.  See how great it is to receive your items right at home, so you can try them on, test them out and enjoy them without having to leave your home!

P.S. – iGive has a lot more than fashion shopping…shop Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Home Shopping Network, QVC, Office Depot, etc., etc., etc!!

All in a Day's Work Play!

Supported Employment Crews Hit the Street

Under contract with the City, our Supported Employment crews are painting house numbers on curbs in the City of Gardena.  They travel by van, leaving notices on the homeowners' doors alerting them to the day that they will be painting in the neighborhood. If the homeowners don't want their curbs painted, they are to leave the notice on their door; otherwise, their curb is painted and we ask for a donation of $6. (Although this method causes some confusion, it is the way that the contract is set up with the City.)  If you live in Gardena, please watch your doorknob for a notice.

THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS!

President's Message October, 2003

Dear Arc members, consumers, and advocates of people with disabilities:

I hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer, which means Fall is here and it is time for our Annual membership meeting and annual pledge campaign. As you may know, we have just experienced a budget cut from Sacramento. We are ending our Arc fiscal year with a deficit ourselves, and when state funding is cut, we face even more difficult challenges.

Sometimes it is uncomfortable to keep asking for more support, but it is necessary for everyone who has a family member at one of our facilities, or whose lives are touched by Arc, to look at how they might help to increase our revenue. We are at a critical point in our struggle of day-to-day operations. If more funds are not found, we will have to cut services and staff even deeper. What would the families do without the services that the Arc provides, not to mention the quality of life that is provided to our consumers?

We owe a great deal of thanks to the devotion and efforts of management personnel. In spite of a reduction in staff and support services, they have managed to carry on the day-to-day operations at all of our facilities with minimal impact. Without them and our volunteers, who go unrecognized most of the time, our consumers would not have the high quality of services that they now do.

But let's look at the positive things that are happening with Arc. We have managed to keep our consumers busy with plentiful and varied work at Southwest Industries and expect another good year of contracts. Our quality of services has not diminished, and we still have all of the same services to offer our consumers that we had last year. We received a three-year accreditation from CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) this year, and received many outstanding remarks regarding our services, our staff, and facilities. You can all be proud of the job the Board of Directors and staff are doing despite the circumstances that they have faced in the past year.

As we look forward to Thanksgiving and the Christmas holidays, we want to thank all of you for your continued support; who give not only of your hard-earned money, but also of your time and all of your efforts, without which we could not survive.
