Nineteen Years and 70 Bowlers Strong!
We have all visited the building where two toned, warm, slightly moist shoes are mandatory and rolled the shiny black ball (getting our fingers stuck in the holes), down a beautifully polished lane, it’s a fun family excursion. BUT…never will you see a more remarkable group of people bowl with such seriousness, sportsmanship, and heart.
At 1:00 p.m. on July 14, the 19th Annual Family Bowling Day was held at the South Bay Bowl. It began with a 15-minute warm-up followed by 3 games of some serious bowling, and concluding (of course) with pizza and an awards presentation. Competition was tough. Smiles were rampant. Pizza was devoured. And the winners were…1st Place, Patrick and Michael Morgan; 2nd Place, Paul Belfy and Jeff Smith; 3rd Place, Judy Baron and Larry Vasquez; and Most Inspirational Bowlers, Keith Stevens and Opal Rich.
Many thanks to our parent volunteers, especially Dorothy Spomer, Marge Bernhardt, Lorna Clark, Masae Yoshida, and Myrtle Stevens for organizing the event and feeding the troops. Also, special thanks to the many family members and friends and members of the South Bay Rotary Sunrise Club for their participation. (After the event, the Rotary Club made a donation of $300 toward the bowling program.)

“The Pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday morning.”
In-Service Held on Clients’ Rights
On March 5, 2002 a facility-wide in-service was held at the Nakaoka Center in Gardena on Client Confidentiality and Clients’ Rights. We were fortunate to have guest speaker Carrie Serles from the Office of Clients’ Rights Advocacy, Patricia Pratts also from the Office of Clients’ Rights Advocacy and Kent Yamashiro from Harbor Regional Center. The Arc-South Bay extends a warm thank you to these three very knowledgeable people for their time and professionalism in discussing this very important issue.
The Office of Clients’ Rights Advocacy (OCRA) is a statewide office run by Protection & Advocacy, Inc., through a contract with the California Department of Developmental Services. OCRA employs a Clients’ Rights Advocate (CRA) at each regional center. The CRA is a person trained to help protect the rights of people with developmental disabilities.
The CRA is available to answer questions about the rights of a person with a developmental disability. Anyone may call including a person with a disability, a family member of a person with a disability, or an interested party. If the CRA is unable to answer your question you will be referred to another resource.

“Miss Charlene Mason sang, ‘I Will Not Pass This Way Again,’ giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.”
WATERING THE YARD JUST GOT EASIER
With the dog days of September upon us, we are happy to report that the sprinkler project at Southwest House is complete, thanks to the lovely people at St. Peter’s By the Sea, in Palos Verdes. In the month of July, volunteers from the Church, led by Ed Richardson, planned and installed a new sprinkler system in the backyard, including flowerbed watering. The South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club helped prepare the yard by paying for removal of a stump and “weed tree” in the corner of the lot.
The system came complete with timer and capability of increasing the number of lines (for expansion into easterly front yard). Ed Richardson went above and beyond the call of duty by repairing broken sprinklers in the westerly and front yards and tying them into the timing system.
When asked how they liked the new sprinklers, residents and staff at Southwest House replied, “WOW!!!” Residents who are responsible for watering the yard were tickled pink to be assisted in their duties by the new system!

The work crew, headed by Ed Richardson, start digging the trenches.
SOUTHWEST INDUSTRIES PURCHASES NEW STOOLS
In response to requests from consumers in our Work Activity Center, we have purchased some work stools for consumers who do table work. The initial order was for six stools to make sure they are adequate for the job. After a trial period, we will order approximately 50 more. Thanks to our donors for making this improvement possible!
COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT SERVICES CLEANS UP!
Since January, our Community Employment Services Department (including supported employment and enclaves) has expanded exponentially. Under the leadership of Manager Derek Benton, 22 individuals have been placed in individual jobs, and others are working in enclaves.
There are basically four enclaves: two for lawn service and two for janitorial. Under direct supervision, a crew of 4-5 is transported to a job site where they perform either janitorial or lawn services. The lawn service can be either a one-time cleanup, or a monthly contract. For more information, call Derek at 310-532-6333, ext. 232.

First place winners Michael and Patrick Morgan are all smiles as “awarder” Ken Hovsepian from the South Bay Sunrise Rotary congratulates them.

Coming in second place were Paul Belfy and Jeff Smith. Jeff had to leave early, so Bob Dworkin stood in for him.

Third place winners, but still proud, are Judy Baron and Larry Vasquez.

Opal Rich and Keith Stevens discuss their “Most Inspirational” award.

Volunteers serve pizza and soft drinks to the hungry crowd.
