In lieu of a Vanguard this month, we are sending out this UPDATE to all of our regular Vanguard readers. (The UPDATE is a monthly publication destined for Arc members.) We hope that you enjoy this – a little lighter summer reading!
Well, the fireworks booth is history for another year. We did even better than last year – partly due I am sure to the advent of the Krispy Kreme outlet right next to our booth! As was the case last year, we split the duties and profits with the Gardena Valley Kiwanis Club. Be sure to visit us next year in the same location – 1299 W. Artesia Blvd., Gardena, in the Food 4 Less parking lot.
While still on the subject of fireworks, let’s thank our volunteers who helped us out at the booth: Margret Pulver, Laura Johnson, Don Kuehnle, Lyn O’Neill-Burton and Dolores Alexander. And also our supporters who provided enough money so that we could put on a good fireworks show for our consumers at Southwest Industries: Margret Pulver, Gladys McKinney, Sylvia Cameron, and Grace Madison. And last, but not least, a very special thank you to Mrs. Vonderschmitt who sent a donation and a note of apology saying that she wouldn’t be able to work in the booth because of her age: she is 90 years old!
Less than a week after the fireworks booth closed, we had our 13th Annual Family Bowling Day at South Bay Bowl. At this event, our regular Saturday AM bowlers team up with a family member, friend or volunteer and bowl competitively for trophies. The winning team was Mike Hargrove and Resa Fredericks…….Everyone in attendance had a great time.
Six representatives from the South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club – Torrance participated at Family Bowling: Jeff and Steve Smith, Bob Dworkin, Bob Young and Jack and Jane Gonzalez. These people deserve a hearty thank you for this and another reason. The Club made a donation in June of $335.00 to help offset expenses incurred by the agency when our bowlers go to tournaments. Why such an odd amount? It is the intake from the club’s recycling program throughout the year…all those cans and bottles add up – in this case they add up to a bus to transport bowlers for the day!
In Memoriam: Eddie Williams, a former consumer of our Adult Development Center, passed away last week after a long illness. We offer heartfelt condolences to his parents who are lifetime members of the Arc, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Williams.
Please see the enclosed 3-month calendar for a peek at upcoming events.
