People who say that lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same spot, would probably also say that you can’t win a trip to the Super Bowl twice in your lifetime. Well, Arc member Bob Barker is living proof that you CAN win the Super Bowl trip twice!! Yes, folks, Mr. Barker’s ticket was the one drawn at our Super Bowl raffle on January 12th, and he also the won the last time we had the raffle, two years ago! Well, maybe it was because he was so nice and let his children go the first time that he just had to win it again so he could go.
When Mr. Barker heard the news that he had won again, he exclaimed, “I just don’t believe it!” (He wasn’t the only one.) This time, he went to the game in Tampa along with one of his sons. Congratulations, Bob – hope you had a great time…and, oh, will you please buy me a lottery ticket??
Also on January 12th, at the Annual Awards and Membership Luncheon, three people were honored for their various contributions to The Arc-South Bay. Jimmy Coleman, a Redondo Beach businessman, was honored for his outstanding support of our Adult Development Center in Hermosa Beach. He has treated the entire program to lunch at Hometown Buffet and has made other contributions as well. Gary Kohatsu, Editor of the Gardena Valley News, was honored for his generous coverage of The Arc in the newspaper and for the extra hours he volunteers to take photos at Arc events for our archives. Lastly, Bob Dworkin, President of the Rotary Club of South Bay-Sunrise, received an award on behalf of the club for its many projects that assist the Arc, particularly those at Southwest House.
Bob McCaman was emcee for the luncheon, which was hosted by Torrance Memorial Medical Center. Here’s a B I G Arc thank you to Kathryn Joiner, Director of Community Service Programs, for making the necessary arrangements for us. Board member Bobbie Hedges did a fantastic job of obtaining door prizes from the following local businesses: Target in Manhattan Beach ($25 gift certificate); gift bag from Trader Joe’s in Manhattan Beach; gift basket from Whole Foods Market in Torrance; movie passes courtesy of Pacific Theatres in Manhattan Beach; and dinner for two at El Paso Cantina, courtesy of Acapulco Restaurant.
